Judicial Council of California Bench Height Study*

Short analysis of cost relative to bench height in courtrooms of several sizes for the JCC, to inform the update to the Trial Court Standards document. This effort required intense efforts by a small, well-coordinated team to establish the bench height “break-points” (points at which increased height resulted in higher costs). Several bench height options were tested, and solutions included raising the rear corridor to reduce ramping behind the bench/well.*

Project Manager/Planner for one team on a multi-firm, statewide planning effort with the goal of identifying and prioritizing all major court projects for consideration for possible state funding. Primary assignment was heading up one four-person team to complete the analysis and reporting for Los Angeles County’s 45 court facilities, including collection and assembly of details on court operations, and determining potential future projects for consideration. Project Manager and lead planner for GSA Master Plan for the Garmatz Federal Courthouse. Tasks included coordinating a detailed physical assessment of the 1970’s building’s existing conditions and facilitating meetings with GSA and the Courts to develop a collaborative long-term plan to address programmatic space needs, circulation, adjacency, and security requirements as well as necessary infrastructure upgrades. Conceptual floor plans, stacking diagrams, and three-dimensional CAD models were developed to fully explain the strategies and phasing. A detailed phasing plan and cost estimate complying with the P120 was developed along with an implementation schedule outlining how this work could be accomplished while maintaining Court operations throughout construction. *

Falls Church City Public Schools Master Plan *

Planning services for the Falls Church City Public Schools, including data collection and analysis to determine the anticipated future growth of the grade-level cohorts at each of four schools in the City; facility assessments to identify major building issues (HVAC, ADA compliance, classroom and capacity limitations); and stakeholder priorities. The latter involved a six-month series of meetings with project and community leadership to determine how/where to separate the grade levels into the buildings, how big is “too big” for elementary school, and what the collective future vision was for the combined middle/high school campus. The result was a comprehensive master plan identifying a set of goals and projects by school facility, with phasing, completed in 2010. Modifications and expansions at the two elementary schools were completed first, followed by the middle/high school campus renovation completed in 2021. *
